SEPA Instant Payments: What They Are and Why They Matter for Businesses in Cyprus

In an increasingly digital economy, speed and reliability are everything. The introduction of SEPA Instant Payments  also known as SEPA Instant Credit Transfers (SCT Inst) marks a major shift in how money moves across Europe. Designed to enable euro payments across SEPA countries in under 10 seconds, this innovation is especially relevant for Cyprus-based businesses and international companies operating here. At Enalian, we help our clients leverage the full potential of these changes to stay competitive, improve liquidity and streamline operations.

What Are SEPA Instant Payments?

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is an EU initiative that simplifies cross-border euro transactions. Traditional SEPA transfers usually take 1 business day to clear. SEPA Instant Payments however, allow euro transfers of up to â‚¬100,000 (*) to be completed in less than 10 seconds, available 24/7/365 including weekends and holidays.

These payments are processed in real time between participating banks across 41 SEPA countries, enabling businesses to transfer and receive funds instantly.

(*) The standard transaction cap is variable at the bank’s discretion and internal policies.

How SEPA Instant Works

  • Real-time: Payments are processed and settled in seconds.
  • Always on: The service operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
  • Euro-only: Transactions must be denominated in euros.
  • Limits: The standard transaction cap is €100,000, though this may vary slightly by bank.

Benefits for Businesses

  • Faster cash flow: Receive payments from customers instantly, improving liquidity.
  • Stronger supplier/customer trust: Confirm transactions in real time, enhancing reliability.
  • Improved operational efficiency: Reduce reconciliation time and minimize delays.
  • Competitive advantage: Stay ahead in sectors like e-commerce, fintech and B2B services where timing matters.

Cyprus & SEPA Instant: Where Do We Stand?

While Cyprus is part of the SEPA zone, adoption among local banks has been gradual. All Cypriot financial institutions have successfully implemented the Receipt of Instant Payments feature, by January 9, 2025 and they are on route to fully comply with the European Union’s implementation standards, which have set a deadline of 25 October 2025 for mandatory compliance with SEPA Instant Payment standards for euro transactions within the EU.

This means that banks and payment service providers in Cyprus and across Europe must be able to receive and send SEPA Instant payments by October 9, 2025.
