Polygraph Testing in Cyprus: Enalian Featured in the American Polygraph Association Magazine

Enalian Consulting Publishes Polygraph Testing Article in APA Magazine

Enalian Consulting has published a new article on polygraph testing in Cyprus. It appears in the latest edition of the American Polygraph Association (APA) Magazine.

The article is titled “Polygraph Testing in Cyprus – A Focus on the Employment Context.” It was co-authored by Michaella Pillakouri, Michalis Severis, and Rita Galides of Enalian Consulting, together with Said R. Khamzin.

The article looks at the law around polygraph testing in Cyprus. It also compares this to the law in the United States. The main focus is on how polygraph tests are used in hiring and in the workplace.

What the Article Covers

The article explores how employment law, privacy rights, and data protection rules work together under the GDPR. It looks at the legal challenges of using polygraph tests at work. It also covers the position of the Cyprus Commissioner for Personal Data Protection. Finally, it weighs employers’ business interests against employees’ basic rights.

The article covers four main areas:

  • The legal rules for polygraph testing in Cyprus workplaces
  • How the GDPR and Cyprus’s Data Protection Law 125(I)/2018 apply to polygraph data
  • The Cyprus Commissioner’s position on this type of workplace testing
  • The balance between an employer’s interests and an employee’s rights

Why This Topic Matters Now

The GDPR has applied fully in Cyprus since 25 May 2018. Any workplace test that measures psychological or physical responses touches on data the regulation treats with extra care.

In an employment relationship, consent is rarely enough on its own as a legal basis. This is because of the power imbalance between employer and employee. That’s why questions of proportionality and necessity sit at the heart of this debate. It’s also why the Commissioner’s guidance matters as much as the law itself.

Cyprus continues to grow as an international business and technology hub. As it does, questions about workplace investigations, confidentiality, and data privacy are becoming more relevant. This applies across sectors, including technology, financial services, and iGaming. Enalian’s article aims to give practical legal insight into this area, not just a theoretical overview.

Together, these efforts show that Enalian plays an active role in shaping how Cyprus law responds to new workplace and technology questions.
